6/27/2023 0 Comments Losing it by cora carmackStill, that's a realistic thought for Bliss to have. Sometimes it feels like life would be much easier if you could just get that over with, like it's an ordeal to be got through, which really doesn't seem like the ideal motivation for having sex. This impulse is one that I completely understand. Losing It is humorous, romantic, and largely realistic.Īt the beginning of Losing It, Bliss has decided she's sick of feeling a freak for being a virgin and that she just wants to get rid of her virginity. Only the relationship with her professor isn't something an average college student might experience, but even that does happen. She has fights with friends and doesn't go through anything incredibly melodramatic. Bliss goes to class and thinks about her future. Though the focus remains on romance, Losing It does actually deal with normal, everyday college stresses. Of all of the New Adult-labeled books I've read, Losing It is the one that comes closest to being what I ideally want. 6/27/2023 0 Comments Virgins diana gabaldon goodreadsThe Big Books of the main series deal with the lives and times of Claire and Jamie Fraser. These deal frequently-but not exclusively-with secondary characters, are prequels or sequels, and/or fill some lacuna left in the original story lines. The Bulges-These being short(er) pieces that fit somewhere inside the story lines of the novels, much in the nature of squirming prey swallowed by a large snake. The Shorter, Less Indescribable Novels that are more or less historical mysteries (though dealing also with battles, eels, and mildly deviant sexual practices). Note that the major novels should be read in order.Ģ. These are numbered from I through X (Roman numerals) in the chronology. The Big, Enormous Books, (aka the nine major novels published so far in the Outlander series) that have no discernible genre (or all of them). The Outlander series includes three kinds of stories:ġ. This is a book both timeless and timely, burnished with anger but tempered by wit, and ultimately a hard-won offering of hope - a sometimes inconvenient, but nonetheless indispensable account for all of us, Indian and non-Indian alike, seeking to understand how we might tell a new story for the future. In the process, King refashions old stories about historical events and figures, takes a sideways look at film and pop culture, relates his own complex experiences with activism, and articulates a deep and revolutionary understanding of the cumulative effects of ever-shifting laws and treaties on Native peoples and lands. Rich with dark and light, pain and magic, this book distills the insights gleaned from that meditation, weaving the curiously circular tale of the relationship between non-Natives and Natives in the centuries since the two first encountered each other. Thomas King, with The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America, has written an engaging and accessible book that has the possibility of awakening curiosity, provoking outrage, and garnering sympathy among readers with little or no such knowledge. The Inconvenient Indian collects personal anecdotes, statistics, musings, contemporary politics, and historical retellings in King’s friendly, familiar, and often-informal tone, one that invites readers to engage with his text while it challenges them to reconsider what they think they know about history and contemporary Native peoples. WINNER of the 2014 RBC Taylor Prize The Inconvenient Indian is at once a “history” and the complete subversion of a history-in short, a critical and personal meditation that the remarkable Thomas King has conducted over the past 50 years about what it means to be “Indian” in North America. Elisa's last wish was for Marisol to scatter her ashes in the country of her birth.Īrriving in Havana, Marisol comes face-to-face with the contrast of Cuba's tropical, timeless beauty and its perilous political climate. Cricket, knowing that cougar relocation can be fatal, wants to ensure continued, occasional village visits by a family of tracked cougars. The compelling plot twist: Anxious villagers are accusing cougars of a series of large-mammal crimes. The nine chapters and epilogue are accessible, entertaining, and empowering for young naturalists. Overall, the dialogue is more natural than in Salamander Rescue (2016), if equally packed with information. It even clarifies one statistic as specifically Canadian. However, McDowell’s books about Cricket typically favor facts about wildlife above all else, and, also typically, this one does not disappoint. It’s odd, then, that the warden’s children proceed to wander the village. After Cricket’s dad informs kids about some cougar facts, Principal Singh gives students a rare week off from school. A cougar has been seen in their village, which is located inside Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta. Her father, Warden McKay, proves her right when he shows up at her school, giving an emergency presentation about cougars. When Cricket and her friend Shilo notice a foul smell coming from piled-up snow and branches under a bush, Cricket suspects that a cougar has hidden its dinner. Through the investigations of young Cricket and her friends, readers learn how to distinguish evidence of a cougar from other animals-and are briefed on cougar conservation and monitoring. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Gloom town by ronald l smithThis atmospheric tale by Smith ( The Owls Have Come to Take Us Away) conjures up a seaside setting full of secrets and long-lost legends.
