"One of the finest of all post-holocaust novels." - The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction … ( more)Įarth Abides is a gentle glide from the stagnation of civilisation to it's feeble, but comfortable, reignition. Together, they will face unimaginable challenges as they sow the seeds of a new beginning. But then he finds Em, a wise and courageous woman who coaxes his stunned heart back to life and teaches him to hope again. ![]() This is the story of one such survivor, Isherwood "Ish" Williams, an intellectual loner who embraces the grim duty of bearing witness to what may be humanity's final days. An instant classic upon its original publication in 1949 and winner of the first International Fantasy Award, Earth Abides ranks with On the Beach and Riddley Walker as one of our most provocative and finely wrought post-apocalyptic works of literature. ![]() ![]() ![]() And who knows? Why did their demands seem so threatening in this moment?. ![]() Women had, after all, been openly agitating for their rights since the middle of the nineteenth century. Hochschild’s goal, it seems, is to emphasize how far the anti-Red crusade was an expression of what we might now call toxic masculinity, the urge to assert racial and gender dominance by those who felt their authority and virility fading. The appeal of war, with its rigid reinforcing of the gender binary, is therefore obvious. It’s also somewhat reductive. The story of uprising and repression that American Midnight tells is overwhelmingly a story of men: of industrial workers, politicians, secret agents, soldiers, vigilantes, protesters, and prisoners. And, as the book lays out in stark and relentless detail, there was repression. ![]() an enraging, gruesome, and depressingly timely story about the fragility of American democracy, as both institution and concept. ![]() ![]() That all combines to build a world that sucks you in, takes away your breath, knocks you on the head and has you begging for more. This is one of the best books I've listened to in years. Slanted but intensely interesting and well written There are many ways to pronounce “tomato”. Listening to a book read by someone who pronounces names and words differently than yourself helps connect you to the world. One of the lessons from 1968 is that global events are connected, even if those involved don’t realise it. Not only did he do a fine job of reading Mark Kurlansky’s marvellous book, but he helped demonstrate that the book was not taking an American view of the world, which I did not believe it did. Cazenove, a British actor, speaks with his native British accent. His work has been criticised here, but I found his performance to be wonderful. ![]() Given it’s global scale, Christopher Cazenove, I believe was a great choice for narrator. Events that did not change the world, but in many ways, changed the way the world acts. This is a very insightful book about a year in which so many significant events occurred. ![]() 6/23/2023 0 Comments The betrayed by kiera cass![]() ![]() The Eastoffes and their cousins, the Northcotts may have the power to dethrone the tyrannical King Quentin – if they can find proof that he was the one who ordered the massacre of the Eastoffes.
